refugee weekStudents from Marian College, West Sunshine, came together during lunch times to design calico bags that will be sent to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

The aim of creating the bags was to provide some sense of encouragement for those in detention. In creating the messages, the students were conscious of maintaining the dignity of the people we were sending them to, while also respecting the difficulties that they are facing at the moment. The bags were created as part of the College’s first Social Justice Week.

Marian College Social Justice Week is a collaboration week between all of the social justice groups led by myself, the Social Justice SRC, that aims to highlight the relevance of being able to help those in need. For the very first Marian College Social Justice Week, as a group, we chose to focus on raising awareness for refugees. I believe that through the organization of this week's activities, such as the calico bag making for refugees, we are nurturing the younger generations to reach out to those who are in need with compassion, no matter how small their actions may be. (Teresa, SRC - Social Justice, Year 12)

Marian College Social Justice week aims to acknowledge the tragedy behind refugees who seek a new home but to demonstrate the need to come together to find and benefit ideas that propose solutions and positive change on a national and global scale. As a united group of the different social justice clubs, we try to leave our own footprint to help this change progress. (Ishara, LEOs Secretary, Year 12)

Social Justice Week and Refugee Week provides the social justice groups of Marian College to collaborate as a team and work to bring light to a topic that is important for everyone to be aware of. I believe that it is important to conduct interactive and educational activities during Social Justice Week, such as the workshop organized to make calico bags for refugees, because it allows us to engage our fellow students in supporting those who are in need. (Tina, United Nations Women's Group Co-president, Year 12)
