annual Constable Steven Tynan Commemoration.18 October 2019

The community of Mazenod College, Mulgrave, remembered a former student at their annual Constable Steven Tynan Commemoration.

Steven Tynan was a student at the college from 1978 to 1982, before joining Victoria Police in 1986. Constable Tynan’s career was tragically cut short on 12 October 1988, when he and Constable Damian Eyre were gunned down in the line of duty while responding to a call in Walsh Street, South Yarra.

As part of the commemoration, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana (Mazenod student 1969 to 1974) visited the college along with other representatives from Victoria’s emergency services, many of them also former Mazenod students.

In preparation for the commemoration, students have been raising money for a donation to the Blue Ribbon Foundation. Year 10 student Ryan, the son of two serving members of Victoria Police, explained the significance of the work of the Foundation to the school community. ‘Blue Ribbon is to remember and honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to make our community a safer place’, he said. ‘The money raised will go to the Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully to help refurbish the women’s and children’s wards.’
