Young artists were recognised for their work at the conclusion of the 2024 Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Creative Arts Exhibition.

A highlight of the annual Catholic Education Week celebrations, the Creative Arts Exhibition is a unique opportunity for primary and secondary school students from across the Archdiocese of Melbourne to present their artwork.

Judges from the National Gallery of Victoria, Zart Art and Australian Catholic University, along with Archbishop Peter and members of the MACS Creative Arts Committee, visited the exhibition to select some of their favourite pieces.

In addition to having their artwork chosen for inclusion in the exhibition by the curators, the following students were recognised through one of the awards:

Archbishop of Melbourne Award for Religious Art

• Winners: Robert, St Jude’s School, Langwarrin; and Alex, De La Salle College, Malvern
• Highly commended: Jordan, Olivia and Sophie, St Joseph’s School, Brunswick West; and Jacinta, Mater Christi College, Belgrave

Australian Catholic University Portraiture Prize

• Winners: Angela, St Joseph’s School, Springvale; and Sunita, Mount St Joseph Girls’ College, Altona
• Highly commended: Ava, Clara, Makayla and Samuel, St Fidelis’ School, Moreland; and Tahlia, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College, Bentleigh

MACS Creative Arts Committee Award

• Winners: Zara, St Jude’s School, Langwarrin; and Isabella, Emmaus College, Vermont South
• Highly commended: Patrick, Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School, Sunbury; and Sofia, St Aloysius College, North Melbourne

MACS Creative Arts Committee Group Work Award

• Winner: Year 6, St Peter Apostle School, Hoppers Crossing
• Highly commended: Sasandhi and Makanaka, St Peter Apostle School, Hoppers Crossing

MACS Creative Arts Committee Year 12 Award

• Winner: Zak, St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully
• Highly commended: Milla, Sacré Coeur, Glen Iris

National Gallery of Victoria Award for Creativity

• Winners: Maya, Holy Trinity School, Wantirna South; and Scarlett, Our Lady of Sion College, Box Hill
• Highly commended: Eleni, Sacré Coeur, Glen Iris; and Max, St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully

National Gallery of Victoria Photography and Media Arts Award

• Winners: Year 5–6 students, St Fidelis’ School, Moreland; and Catalina, Kilbreda College, Mentone
• Highly commended: Molly, St Jude’s School, Langwarrin; and Hugh, Padua College, Mornington

People’s Choice Award

• Winners: Isla, St Macartan’s School, Mornington; and Jonathan, De La Salle College, Malvern
• Equal second place: Marcel, St Margaret’s Primary School, Maribyrnong; and Wendy, St Joseph’s School, Springvale

Zart Art Sculpture and 3D Art Award

• Winners: Year 3–5 students, St Francis de Sales Catholic Primary School, Lynbrook; and Year 8 students, St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully
• Highly commended: Year 3–4 students, Sacred Heart School, Oakleigh; and Lavanya, Santa Maria College, Northcote
