History:

Sacred Heart School has been serving the needs of the poor and disadvantaged in Fitzroy since 1857. Established by the Sisters of Mercy, Sacred Heart School has always had the wellbeing of the vulnerable and voiceless at the heart of everything we do.

Originally sited at a different location to the present school, Sacred Heart school (known at the time as ‘The school of the Angel Guardian and Sacred Heart’) was moved to its current location in 1960. Land adjoining the local Parish of All Saints Church was acquired, and a building program began in 1960 to build new school facilities on the corner of Moor, Young and King William Streets. Bishop James Fox laid the foundation stone in 1960, and the school, with the ability to accommodate 360 children, was completed in 1961.

Sacred Heart has always ministered to the multicultural and social needs of newly arrived migrants and refugee communities. The establishment and development of the Atherton Gardens Housing towers in the 1970’s meant that Sacred Heart school needed to respond to the needs of one of the most vulnerable and multicultural communities in Melbourne. In 1975, 94% of children attending the school were from 24 different overseas countries, and 98% of these children were living in the flats. Sacred Heart School still supports this wonderful and multicultural diverse community today. The Sisters of Mercy relinquished the administration of the school to lay principalship in 1992 and various building programs and renovations have been undertaken to ensure our students’ learning environment is welcoming and inviting for all.

Description:

Today, Sacred Heart School still brings together a diverse range of students from many culturally different and diverse backgrounds. We proudly look after the spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of every child.

As the Catholic School in All Saints Parish, we espouse the values taught by Jesus in the Gospels. Our school is enhanced by our richly diverse population. We welcome children and families of all nationalities and faith traditions.
Sacred Heart, Fitzroy is a small school with big expectations. We provide a safe, caring and supportive learning environment and work to ensure that all students can experience success, with wellbeing at the centre of all we do. Learning is for life not just for school. At Sacred Heart, we are focused on learning that enables us to participate fully in life in the 21st century.

Our school vision inspires us in our work every day. As people of the Sacred Heart, we aspire to be a united community of faith and learning where love, hope and welcome flourish.

We embrace the challenge of providing a comprehensive learning program that will enable all of our young people to fully participate in modern society. At Sacred Heart, we highly value community.

We are a school community where everyone is known by name. We highly value the learning partnership between school and home and actively work to engage our families in a shared conversation about learning.
