St Gabriel’s School, Reservoir, held a two-day art show on Tuesday and Wednesday last week.

The art show featured works inspired by artists from different periods in history, including Leonardo da Vinci, MC Escher, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet, as well as works involving photography, graphic and web design, and coding. The exhibition also featured a ‘Tactility Room’ and an ‘Obliteration Room’.

The Tactility Room was designed to enhance understanding of those with disabilities, and allowed visitors to engage their senses and interact with the artwork. It was inspired by the Urban Tactility installation, which ran in Melbourne between 22 July and 11 August. Architects from Open House Melbourne and OoPLA helped the students develop their own project.

The Obliteration Room, inspired by the works of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, also allowed viewers to engage with the artwork. Visitors were encouraged to stick coloured dots around a white room. Over the course of the exhibition, the room was transformed into a myriad of colours.

‘It was a great celebration of the engaging and innovative work that is happening at our school’, said Principal Mark Miatello.

‘St Gabriel’s art, digital technology and design extravaganza was a great opportunity to strengthen the links between the St Gabriel community’, he added.

Aside from the individual pieces created by students, each year level also produced collaborative pieces with their teachers. These were sold at an auction held at the school on the first day of the exhibition.
