12 September 2016

NAIDOC Week was held in the first week of July. The Year 6 students at Holy Name School, Preston East, were learning about biography and narrative 2016 NAIDOC medal winner Areeba with Councillor Julie Williams and Dylan Williams representing NAIDOC and the Prime Minister's Officewriting in the first half of the year. In Term 2, the students learnt about the history of Australia.

To celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, we participated in the NAIDOC writing competition. The competition guidelines were to write a fictional short story with illustrations and photographs titled: The Day I Met My Indigenous Role Model.

Areeba wrote a fictional short story about meeting Cathy Freeman:

I'm a very, very, very big fan of Cathy Freeman not just for her sports skills, but just the fact that she never gives up (even when she loses). In fact, that motivates her even more. She’s a true role model. Oh, what I would do to meet Cathy in real life!

Areeba’s short story won her a Prime Minister’s medal for the NAIDOC week 2016 short story competition. This was a huge award to win, as there were only 25 medals awarded.

On 1 September, Areeba was presented with the medal by Councillor Julie Williams, representing the City of Darebin, and Dylan Williams representing NAIDOC and the Prime Minister’s office (pictured).
