15 September 2017St Pius X School's exhibition pieces

Last month St Pius X School, Heidelberg West, celebrated their 2017 art exhibition. The exhibition titled ‘Watch, Grow and Shine: The Nature of Seasons’ included paintings, drawings, collages, textile works, sculptures and four large, impressive banners hanging from the ceiling representing the collaborative work of all students on their definition of the elements of each season.

The exhibition artworks were created to honour and celebrate: the 40th anniversary of the Heidelberg School artists trail; Vincent van Gogh’s recent ‘Seasons’ exhibition; David Hockney’s ‘Current’ show; the ’Turbulence’ exhibition at the local Hatch Gallery; and St Pius' local historical landscape.

The young artists of St Pius X have worked conscientiously since the beginning of the year to create the large body of work displayed that focused on the elements of the local environment and seasonal changes. The students used their skills, imagination and knowledge to create all of the art works that were displayed at the exhibition.

Earlier in the year, Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Shadow Minister for Families and Social Services, visited St Pius X to present art awards and prizes to our young artists. Patrick Stone won first prize and Tiah Hayes and Darra Hayes both won the Smike's encouragement award. An independent art curator judged the work from school entries in the local area and commented that he was impressed with the high standard of the St Pius X artists’ landscapes. It was an art trifecta to the Hayes family, who also had Yani Hayes win the Melbourne Archbishop’s award at the 2017 Catholic Education Week Visual Arts Exhibition.
