This year Marymede Day Mass was held at St Patrick's Cathedral led by Archbishop Denis J Hart DD to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Marymede Catholic College, South Morang. The mass saw over 1,700 students, 150 staff, special guests and all four principals (past and present) gather in celebration for what was a truly memorable event. 
 

Paul Fumei was principal of Marymede from 2009 to 2011 and attended the celebration. ‘The singing of the Marymede Anthem at the end of Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral on 12 August was very beautiful indeed.’

When it opened in 2006, Marymede was the first purpose-built P–12 Catholic school in Melbourne with an enrolment of just 294 students. Today, just 10 years later, the school educates 1,726 students!

‘As a P–12 school, Marymede Catholic College is indeed extraordinary in its capacity to offer thirteen consecutive years of schooling on the one site. The opportunity for siblings and friends to stay connected over such a span of time provides a strong and rich protective element in terms of their wellbeing,’ said Mr Fumei.

‘Already with an amazing history, I wish to offer Marymede Catholic College my prayers and good wishes as it seeks to be the strongest possible Catholic community where every member experiences welcome, hospitality and a passion for learning.’

In further exciting school news, Marymede students were recently crowned State Champions at the annual Tournament of Minds (an annual problem solving program for teams of students which aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment.)

According to Rick (Year 10), the hardest aspect of the State Finals was ‘collaborating together whilst also overcoming our creative differences within only a three hour timespan was probably the most challenging part.’ 

As a result of the students’ victory in the Secondary Maths & Engineering division, they’ll now represent Victoria at the Australasian Pacific Finals to be held on the Gold Coast in October where they’ll come up against other State winners along with teams from New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand.

‘We’re looking forward to representing our State and competing against teams from across Australia and overseas. Just making this stage is a huge accomplishment and we’re all very proud of what we’ve achieved’.

Team Marymede will represent Victoria in the Australasian Pacific Finals to be held on the Gold Coast on 15 October 2016 at Griffith University.
