Glowrey Catholic School, Wollert, was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Terence Curtin at a ceremony on Wednesday.

The school has been named in honour of Dr Sr Mary Glowrey JMJ who, in 1920, gave up her career as a doctor in Australia to care for the poorest women and children in India. Becoming a religious Sister with the Society of Jesus Mary Joseph in Guntur, Dr Sr Mary Glowrey JMJ founded the Catholic Health Association of India whose members now care for 21 million people a year.

Principal Tim Kelly welcomed guests, including Bronwyn Halfpenny MLA and representatives from Catholic Education Melbourne, to tour the new school. ‘My special thanks go to our students and parents as we build this community together’, he said before a plaque was unveiled by Parish Priest Anh Nguyen and Louise McGrath, great-niece of Dr Sr Mary Glowrey JMJ.

Glowrey Catholic School, Wollert, joins Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School, Sunbury, as two Catholic primary schools opened in Melbourne’s north in 2019.
