Sara Hinton, student at Ave Maria College, Aberfeldie, is the Victorian winner of the Simpson Prize for 2018. Sara received her certificate and medallion from the Assistant Minister Vocational Education and Training, the Hon. Karen Andrews MP at a presentation ceremony at Parliament House, Canberra on Monday 26 March.

The presentation was part of a two-day trip to Canberra where she and other prize winners visited several of the capital’s museums and institutions and attended a formal dinner at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

The eight state and territory winners will also travel to overseas battlefields as part of their prize.

The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students. The competition encourages participants to explore the significance of the Anzac experience and what it has meant for Australia.

Sara’s winning essay debated the statement that 1917 was ‘the worst year of the Great War’ for Australia and Australians, and can be downloaded from the Simpson Prize website.

The competition is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and run by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia.
