On Monday morning St Joseph’s School, Sorrento, was the host school for the Sorrento leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) as it makes its way to the Gold Coast for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A St Joseph’s parent, Jodie Carroll, was nominated to take part in the baton relay in recognition of all her volunteer work. The school nominated Year 4 student, Casey O’Shannessy, to be the QBR Junior Ambassador for being hardworking and respectful with others.

At the ceremony on the grounds of St Joseph’s, the school community combined with neighbouring Sorrento Primary School to watch the baton arrive. Casey said he was honoured to be chosen to be the Junior Ambassador and answered questions from the crowd about the features of the baton he held.

The baton is made of three materials: recycled plastic, which is sustainable and represents the future; stainless steel, which reflected back on nature and represents the present; and wood, from native Australian trees, which represents the past. The baton also contains a letter from the Queen inside it, and an LED light for those batonbearers running at night.
