Late last year Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College (OLSH), Bentleigh, and OLSH student Mikaela Hum were presented with the Applied Learning Awards forApplied Learning Award recipients from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Bentleigh, Claudia Strong, VCAL Coordinator, Maureen Malone, and Mikaela Hum; Mikaela receives her award from school principal Anne O'Loughlin School and Student of the Year respectively (in the Bayside, Glen Eira and Kingston regions).

 

OLSH College was recognised for its many programs and initiatives in Applied Learning, including:

  • coordinating the Southern Region VCAL Cluster Group with approximately 50 teachers
  • their VCAL and VET students coordinate a full-day experience for the students at Berendale Special School with activities, lunch and buddies at OLSH
  • a dedicated applied learning room for all VCAL and VET classes specifically set up to cater applied learners
  • a peer support program between senior VCAL and VET Community Service students and junior students who require assistance with their learning.

Mikaela was recognised for her many achievements in applied learning, and her enthusiasm and generosity.

  • Last year Mikaela completed her Certificate 111 in Information Technology and Digital Media and her VCAL Senior Certificate.
  • In 2015 she completed a Certificate 11 in Community Services and Units 3 and 4 in Studio Arts.
  • In mid-2016 Mikaela commenced a traineeship with Camp Australia in Certificate 111 Early Childhood Education and Care which she will continue this year. As part of this program she left school at 1.30 pm every day to work in an
    afterschool care program for three hours.
  • Mikaela was also a Peer Tutor with two students, working with them during study periods, planning lessons and giving feedback at parent and teacher meetings. She has also been a mentor to new Peer Tutors.
  • From Year 9 Mikaela was an ‘e leader’, part of a team of students who help and support IT within the school, often called on to assist teachers and students.
  • Mikaela also won the school’s inaugural Karen Park Memorial Award for displaying the qualities of generosity, sense of fun, loyalty, courage and gratitude.

OLSH VCAL Coordinator, Maureen Malone, said Mikaela ‘is a well-regarded and highly respected member of the OLSH school community’.
