Level crossing removals are a familiar part of the changing face of Melbourne, but for St Gabriel’s School, Reservoir, they also presented an opportunity to share student art and stories with the community.

St Gabriel’s is located across the road from the redevelopment of Reservoir Station. With such a dramatic change occurring in the neighbourhood, teachers at the school used inspiration from Mem Fox’s book Where is the Green Sheep? to create their own storybooks titled Where is the Reservoir train?

In Art, students in Years 1 and 2 created backgrounds, folded cardboard trains and developed their own scripts. During Digital Technology, students photographed their backgrounds and train props, uploaded them to the ebook software and added their text.

The ebooks (book 1 and book 2) were shared with the Level Crossing Removal Authority, which arranged for the pages of the books to be printed and displayed at Reservoir Station to celebrate its reopening earlier this week.
