A team of students from St Monica’s College, Epping with their solar-powered boat.A team of students from St Monica’s College, Epping, has won the Australian-International Model Solar Challenge with their solar-powered boat. The event was held at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Students Paris Mascetti, Ross Alexopoulos and Natalia Straube worked together on the ‘Model Solar Open Boat Challenge’. They designed and built the boat following a strict set of rules and guidelines, taking on all comers to be crowned the international champions. The team was managed by Mr Chris Macnaughtan, VET Automotive and Technology teacher.

‘Our students have been working on this project since Term 1 and it is fantastic to see them achieve at such a high level’, said school principal, Mr Brian Hanley. ‘This challenge teaches the students how to work together in teams, gain knowledge relevant to renewable energies and learn about the mechanics of solar construction. We are very proud of their exceptional results.’
