Avila College students mentor local primary school students in Science projects14 August 2017

Year 8 students worked as science mentors for Grade 4 students during the recent STEM 4 ALL program at Avila College, Mount Waverley.

Over seven weeks, 180 primary and secondary students worked in teams to devise research questions, plan experiments and present their findings. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) principles were used to seek answers to life’s big questions. For the Year 8 mentors, the experience reinforced their commitment to science. ‘I loved being a mentor, and working collaboratively was great fun. I now have a different appreciation of science.’

The Grade 4 students from Good Shepherd School (Wheelers Hill), Holy Family School (Mount Waverley), St Christopher’s School (Glen Waverley) and St Leonard’s School (Glen Waverley) started their investigations in their school before moving to Avila College to use the College’s science facilities. Students, teachers, principals and families from the five schools gathered at Avila College last Monday to celebrate their achievements.

National Science Week 2017 continues until Sunday 20 August.
