After an extensive audition process, including workshops and call backs, 23 boys from across Victoria were chosen to join the Ensemble Cast of
Sir Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures & Re:Bourne adaptation of Lord of the Flies, which opens at the Arts Centre tomorrow night.
 

Hundreds of boys auditioned during a three month, Victoria-wide search for cast members last year. Included in the Young Ensemble cast is Christian Brothers College, St Kilda, student George Missailidis (Year 8); and Salesian College, Chadstone, student Campbell Phelan (Year 9).

Although published over 60 years ago, William Golding’s classic novel Lord of the Flies is still one of the most widely read and frequently examined books today. In this theatrical performance, the action is transferred from a deserted island to deserted theatre, as a group of schoolboys find themselves abandoned. With no adults around they start to make their own rules.

Golding’s legendary characters are brought to life with raw physicality, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances by a cast of New Adventures professional dancers and remarkable young talent from across Victoria.

The Young Ensemble, ranging in age from 10 to 25, are from all over Victoria including Leongatha, Shepparton, Swan Hill, Mildura, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Edithvale as well as a number of metropolitan suburbs.

George, whose younger brother Alexander is also in the cast, said, 'I've really enjoyed making new friends and working with the professional dancers and choreographers from Australia and the UK. I also love the fact this show enables us as dancers to freely improvise and develop our own characters through movement and contemporary dance'.

This production is an Australian premiere exclusive to Melbourne and is on at the Arts Centre Melbourne from 5–9 April 2017.
