The students at Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Ocean Grove, have shown their care for the elderly parishioners in their community by writing them letters. The vital school–parish links provide a strong sense of identity and belonging for the children who are eager to participate in community activities such as writing letters to the elderly parishioners who might be feeling lonely at this time.

Letting the parishioners know that they are connected was important for Will, Year 4, who wrote: ‘You are in the same parish as I am. We are so lucky to live here with the beach and sunshine. How has COVID-19 been for you? Have you been well?’

In her thoughtful letter, Ruby, also in Year 4, wrote: ‘What do you like doing that makes you happy? The thing that makes me happy right now is writing this letter to you.’

Principal Kerryn Sells said: ‘Community is really important in times like these. Supporting and acknowledging others, especially the elderly in our parish, is a way that we can make a difference.’
