History:

A Catholic secondary college to serve the boys of the Clayton/Springvale/Waverley region was the vision of the parish priests of the area (Frs Lombard, Coghlan, Ryan and Gavin OMI). These far-sighted men realised that the area, which was largely paddocks in 1960, was going to grow into lively suburbia. They started even then to plan for a college. The result of their early action was that when the college was a necessity in the late 1960s it had already started.

On Tuesday 7 February 1967, following a Mass of the Holy Spirit the previous night, Mazenod College started. Due to a very tight financial position (a situation which would remain for almost six years – until government funding got into full swing) the College had very humble beginnings. It commenced in two classrooms in St Joseph's Primary School, Springvale. In its first year there was a total enrolment of 79 students (two classes of Year 7s) and total staff of two: Fr James Fitzpatrick OMI and Mr Pollard.

Description:

Mazenod College is a Catholic Regional Archdiocesan College providing a secondary education for boys from the parishes of St Joseph's, Springvale; St John Vianney's, North Springvale; St Peter's, Clayton; Good Shepherd, Mulgrave; St Leonard's, Glen Waverley, and St Justin's, Wheelers Hill. The College gives preference to Catholic boys from these parishes, other students are accepted if vacancies occur.

Students requiring special assistance with learning difficulties, social and emotional skills, hearing, vision, or physical mobility are catered for by the Learning Centre. This involves constant support from the Learning Centre staff and visiting specialist teachers. The Futures Program assists students in the transition from secondary school to work or tertiary studies.

Vocational training is also encouraged through the implementation of OWE (Opportunities for Work Education) at Year 10, as well as VCE Vocational studies in Recreation, Engineering and Building. Mazenod College is also a Monash University Mathematics Enhancement Centre and this enables our students to obtain credits in first-year university subjects.

Features:

The College seeks to develop fully the intellectual, moral, creative, and physical potential of each student in a disciplined, fair and challenging environment provided by a committed and well-qualified staff.

It also seeks to instil in its students a sense of their own worth and to promote initiative, self-reliance, integrity and leadership. There is also the broader objective of instilling in students a genuine respect for others of different cultural and social backgrounds.

Mazenod College endeavours to help each student acknowledge his own successes. The experience of success encourages the young man to accept the challenges of life. The College aims to provide a learning environment whereby the talents of our students are developed.
