Daniel Fisher from Assumption College, Kilmore, is a Victorian School-based Apprentice of the Year Finalist for 2017.

Daniel is incorporating a School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) program into his Year 12 VCE. The school’s broad VET program allowed Daniel to completely change direction from thinking he wanted to be an electrician to knowing he wanted a career as primary school teacher.

Daniel undertook VET Electro-technology in Year 10, which while enjoyable, helped him decide that being an electrician was not for him. In Year 11 he completed VET Acting (Screen) subject, which increased his communication skills and self-confidence

After a week of work experience at Sacred Heart School in Yea, he discovered teaching was definitely the career path for him. He applied for a SBAT Certificate III in Education Support – through Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE. After Year 12 he intends to study Bachelor of Education (Primary).

Daniel says, ‘The best part about teaching is that no two days are ever the same. There’s no better feeling once you help a kid and he actually understands a maths equation or can spell a word. It’s amazing.’

The Department of Education and Training’s 2017 Victorian Training Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 11 October at Crown, Palladium. Now in its 63rd year, the prestigious Victorian Training Awards recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of Vocational Education and Training students, teachers, training providers and employers.
