26 May 2017Emmaus College students competing in the 2017 VEX Robotics World Championships

Emmaus College was thrilled to be one of only two schools from Australia invited to participate in the 2017 VEX Robotics World Championships – the pinnacle event on the VEX robotics calendar, which brings together over 500 of the leading high school robotics teams from around the globe.

The scale of the event is enormous and is held in the Kentucky Exposition Centre with finals in the three sections, Middle School, High School and University taking place in an arena the size of Hisense.

The Emmaus College team, RoboRoos, competed in the Engineering division of the High School section winning four of its ten matches, ranking them in 60th place overall.

The team experienced the highs and lows of robotic competitions, with their robot getting entangled in field objects, falling over and being stretched to the limit, but the team responded with driving nerves of aluminium, always up-righting the robot, recovering and consistently picking up the yellow stars and orange cubes – the scoring components of the ‘Starstruck’ game that they needed to drop onto their opposing team’s field wall.

The team members – Brandon Barbie, Adam Ranellone, James Anquetil, Jarryd Govic and Matt Brownlee – are all determined to return in 2018 with a new robot design for the 2017/18 game ‘In the Zone’.
